The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Forderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (FhG) works in applied research and development. Founded in 1949 as a non-profit registered association. The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics -Ernst-Mach-Institut (EMI) - is one of Germany's main research institutes for defense and security. EMI coordinates both the Fraunhofer Group for Defense and Security and the Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster "Future Security BW". EMI maintains the Center of Competence for the Management of Damage on Infrastructure and Buildings and deals with activities in the fields of hazard and risk analysis for terrorist threats and protection of built infrastructures.
The department of sociology (DoS) at the University of Freiburg has a long tradition in research in the field of norm theory and empirical sociological and anthropological studies of law. The department's work is characterized by a commitment toward combining social-philosophical theoretical reflections and empirical analysis. Core areas of research include "City, Region and Security" and "Organization, Technology and Security". A forthcoming major field of study is "Security in modern societies". The Centre collaborates closely with the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (MPI) and the Fraunhofer-Institute for High-Speed Dynamics - Ernst-Mach-Institute (EMI).

The Verwey-Jonker Institute is an independent national organization for social scientific research, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Their research provides usable and scientifically supported answers to socio-societal questions. Work is undertaken at the request of local, provincial, national and international clients. The substantial wide and varied research domain is subdivided into three research groups: 1) Citizenship, safety and social vitality, 2) Youth, child rearing and education, 3) Participation in society. Some topics of research are: local governance strategies, security and safety provisions, public and domestic violence, integration and polarization issues, participation and citizenship.
EURICUR is the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research. It was founded by the Mayors of Barcelona and Rotterdam and by the Erasmus University in 1989. It is a private organization embedded to the Erasmus University Rotterdam; it uses the research staff of RHV B.V., a subsidiary of Erasmus Holding (fully owned by Erasmus University, Rotterdam). EURICUR initiates and carries out studies on strategic urban issues in response to the challenges cities and metropolitan regions face. The institute has a strong experience in territorial and urban analysis with a special emphasis on comparative studies on policy issues in a range of topics, including safety and security.
The Institute for Service Industry Research (CNR) is part of the National Research Council (CNR) network, whose institutes is spread throughout the whole national territory, and is connected with the Department for Cultural Identity. Scientific interests focus on service activities, today considered an important component of advanced economic systems and a key element for territorial system competitiveness. The following research areas ideally foster and consolidate the traditional scientific interests of the Institute: Tourism and Cultural Heritage; Business services; Logistic and Freight Transport; Migration and Urban Planning. A new research line has been started recently for facing cross-pollinations between urban planning and the management of the built environment development. A specific focus is represented by the multicultural city transformations due to globalization phenomena and migratory flows.
